The Nicholson Clinic for Weight Loss Surgery’s founder talks about the potential benefits.
Plano, TX, Oct. 10, 2016 – Keeping type 2 diabetes under control is a daily battle for thousands of Americans. Doing so can mean the difference between developing life-limiting complications or leading a relatively healthy life. Even so, the balancing act diabetics face can be daunting. It can be complicated even more if obesity is a pressing concern.
The link between type 2 diabetes and obesity, in fact, has long been established. Obesity is known to greatly enhance diabetes risks. Losing weight has been shown to help people lower their risks and it can help diabetics better control their symptoms. Research has shown that weight loss surgery in particular cases can have profound impacts on obesity-associated type 2 diabetes.
“A number of studies have shown that gastric bypasses in particular can help type 2 diabetics better control the symptoms of the disease,” says Dr. Nick Nicholson, founder and lead surgeon at the Nicholson Clinic for Weight Loss Surgery. “In some cases, weight loss surgery has also been shown to help type 2 diabetics reverse the disease.”
When the obesity is an underlying concern with type 2 diabetes, shedding weight and keeping it off can improve the condition, studies have found. While some patients do enjoy a reversal of symptoms, Nicholson adds, there are no guarantees that this will occur in every case. Some studies have shown that type 2 diabetics who address obesity with weight loss surgery within the first few years after diagnosis are more likely to see strong impacts on symptoms.
“Weight and type 2 diabetes do go hand-in-hand,” says Dr. Nicholson. “When steps are taken to address weight, the daily balancing act of keeping blood sugars under control can become much easier to manage.”
